Recognizing Three Illinoisans Tragically Killed In Afghanistan May 1, 2014
Jan Schakowsky, D-IL
"John Gabel, a visiting lecturer at Kabul University’s information technology department, was shot along with his father, Gary Gabel. Both were from Palatine, Illinois and members of the Orchard Evangelical Church in Arlington Heights. Pastor Colin Smith of the church described John as a “computer genius with a perfect mind” who was living out his faith through his service in Afghanistan. Amy Dillman, who worked with John while he was at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, said, “I think John just had a calling and he could see where the work he was good at—the programming and the information technology—could be useful and of service to other areas and other parts of the world that really needed that infrastructure.”"
David Dillman Tribute April 7, 2014
Scott Tipton, R-CO
"Mr. Speaker, I rise today in recognition of Mr. David Dillman, a dedicated business and marketing teacher at Durango High School. After leaving a highly successful career in sales and marketing in the private sector, Mr. Dillman began his teaching career in 1997, where he has inspired hundreds of students to learn more about business. Throughout his teaching career, Mr. Dillman took it upon himself to mentor his students and provide them with real-world business experience and insights to help them succeed. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Dillman has diligently worked with local businesses to help students obtain employment. Once they have a job, he continues to advise them on best practices to tackle problems in the workplace and encourages them to build a strong work ethic that will serve them throughout their professional lives. In his limited personal time, Mr. Dillman continues in his service by initiating and leading a new Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) program in his high school. DECA programs and competitions provide emerging business leaders training and hands-on experience in the areas of hospitality, marketing, management, finance and entrepreneurship. He also works to ensure that his students are able to participate in the Annual Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Stock Market Game Capitol Hill Challenge every year. In addition to all of this, Mr. Dillman develops numerous partnerships with businesses for Durango High School. His enthusiasm for his craft and caring for his students is something deserving of recognition. Mr. Speaker, it is truly an honor to recognize Mr. Dillman today for his passion for education and his unyielding dedication to his students. I congratulate him on his numerous achievements, thank him for his service, and look forward to seeing how he will continue to inspire future generations in his classroom and beyond."

"Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor Dr. Robert Dillman, who will be retiring as President of East Stroudsburg University on June 30, 2012, after sixteen years of serving the university and our region. East Stroudsburg University is one of the fourteen state universities that compose the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. It offers 7,387 students a world class education. Dr. Dillman, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., came to East Stroudsburg University after several years of experience in higher education, and undoubtedly left his mark. Dr. Dillman demonstrated extraordinary leadership at East Stroudsburg University. By recognizing the importance of science and technology, he positioned the university as a key economic development force in Northeastern Pennsylvania. During his tenure, East Stroudsburg University became the first university in the United States to offer an undergraduate degree in computer security. The university also established its award-winning Business Accelerator Program, which joined the Ben Franklin Business Incubator Network and the University City Science Center’s Port of Technology. In addition, President Dillman led the expansion of the Division of Research and Economic Development, which serves as a vital educational resource for technology-based entrepreneurs.
